Instead they say “Welcome Again”.
This is what the mountain probably wanted to say, when we flew extremely near by and had a last clear and perfect view to “him” 🙂
While waiting at the Zanzibar Int’l Airport, checked through to Frankfurt it is time to see, how much money the local SIM saved us.
According to the roaming cost of 0,79€ per 50kb = 15,80€ per 1MB our blogging endeavor would have cost as little as 11.732€, whereas we payed locally 10€.
Isn’t it time, to think about data roaming?

Looking forward to see you all soon. Tonight, we’ll celebrate our 31st wedding day:-)
P.S. To be honest there is is a cost brake at 60€ per month data roaming. Don’t know what happens after the brake, it would however not been possible to report from our once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Thanks Eric from Vodacom, Moshi, Tanzania:-)

Enjoy watching.

Our hotel “Next Paradise” indeed deserves its name 🙂

Only disadvantage is, we have to share the pool with two other couples. Since we however prefer the Indic Ocean its all right now;-)

So far, we couldn’t tell how lucky the decision was, to skip a camp and climb the peak a day earlier.
On our flight to Zanzibar, we could take a quick shot of the now snow white mountain.
Indeed it started to snow (rain in regions lower than 4500m) an hour after we returned from the peak to the base camp.

Mount Kilimanjaro from our flight to Zanzibar.

Our luggage on the last camp after a rainy/snowy night and before final descent.

Now that we have a small spot at Baranco Camp, where there is in fact Internet, let us tell everyone, that we are good and our guides satisfied, how we mastered the test height of 4.600m.
Therefor we might decide to skip tomorrow’s camp, which is only 2h away from todays and move on the summits base camp and start ascent on Tuesday already, giving one more day to relax:-)

There are three differences:
1. You cannot escape the real height
2. There is beautiful nature around you
3. There is real fresh air there

This Post written while offline in the Shira Cave Camp.

Today, we are supposed to give our best wishes to Alice and Jans Wedding.
However we might not be able to accomplish this mission, as there is absolutely no signal in the camp. For better acclimatization, we will to climb a point, where there should be a signal, however it might be to early German time.
We will anyway try to MMS Marcel and possibly place a call.
Thats all we can do in wilderness. Our guide told us the signal shall be better available from tomorrow on…

This post written while offline. Hoping to get a signal in Shira Camp.
Written offline at Lava Tower. It looks like 4600 is a height that does not yet affect us, which makes our guides happy.
We have reached 3000 Meters today. All is well only the internet is a bit unstable. So thats it for today.
Just had our first teatime. So nice guides and porters.

View in the direction of the Shira Camp – our tomorrows goal.
Pls keep on noticing, that internet connection is really slow and volatile. Just went 100m above the Machame Camp, which is recommended anyway for better sleep.

Just reached Machame Hut@3000m.
Internet connection slow and volatile, therefor picture upload is difficult.
Walk was 4:30h through the rainy rainforest.
Will write more offline later today. So far it was great, our guide Carlson is very nice.
All stress @work left home and the stress to really make it to the bottom of Mt. Kilimanjaro left behind, we are now at the last “civilized” breakfast.
In an hour, we are supposed to leave for 7 days in the wilderness.

After 24 h door-to-door, we met our guide Carlson already. He is the same who took the boss of Hoehenfitness Jena
to the summit in January this year.
We are now packed, sitting in the bar and look very much forward to tomorrow morning 9pm, when the endeavor starts.
Local internet SIM works, however volatile and mostly edge;-)
We’ll see how it goes on the mountain.

Mt. Kilimanjaro on the horizon our way to Moshi Town.

Eric from Vodacom, who nicely prepared the local SIM, thanks, Eric – my first friend in Africa

Just bought the last pieces for the Kili adventure. Thus we think it’s time to thank all who helped in preparation:
today we had our 10th (last) altitude adaption training and reached 6001 m.
We felt good at this height and therefor looking forward with optimisms to reach the real summit.
Thanks to the super friendly and competent team of Hoehenfitness Jena.

During the past 30 days, finally chosen XTPower® MP-S23000 Solar Powerbank (http://www.amazon.de/XTPower%C2%AE-MP-S23000-Powerbank-mobiler-Solarakku/dp/B00936CPXW)
was able to charge my iPhone 14 times from an average low of 18% to full.
Solar recharge requires 4 days in full sun, which is explained by the banks capacity and its panels wattage.
Makes me confident, to “survive” 7 days w/o power outlet 😉

In the course of our 4th altitude training, we reached 4.800 m.
Blood oxygen level was quite good. Adaption seems to work:-)

after our yearly summer garden party yesterday at http://www.gartenlokal-birnstiel.de/ we thought it would be harder to “survive” “walking” at 4000 m, but it was OK. May be it felt a bit like (still) drunken 😉

Today we had our first altitude training at an oxygen leval equal to 3.500 m above sea level in a row of 10 lessons.
Learned a lot about blod oxygen level and how this training works.
It went nicely. May be because we are used to skiing at such altitude at the Hintertux Glacier.
Will see how it goes next Saturday at 3.700 m.
If you like to train at alpine altitude, visit http://www.hoehenfitness-jena.de/
Nice people there, who know their business.

Now that the decision was made for Runtastic, lets start publishing a few tracks, to get familiar also with Blogpress.

After intensive investigation of many tracking apps (Trails, Northface, Smartrunner, Runkeeper, Runtastic and more) I finally decided for Runtastic.
Criteria were:
Even though Runtastic has not the lowest battery consumption, it is the only app with reliable upload and sharing. The Runtastic portal is among the best.
After quite some efforts with Telekom, to get rid of my SIM Lock, I made contact with a local provider in Moshi Town, who will provide a nano-SIM with unlimited data for 30 day at 9,90€.
After being neglected for 1/2 h in the Lauche&Maas store in Jena, even though we had indicated to be willing to buy our Kili-equipment today, we found a new store
(INTERSPORT ADVENTURE) where we were immediately welcome and got perfect service.
Visited various outfitters today and easily decided for Lauche&Maas (www.lauche-maas.de).

– the TomTom and the Alaska-map App, which perfectly guided us through the wilderness
– almost all hotels, shops and restaurants, who proided wireless fidelity for free
– Skype that allowed phoning home at no cost
– http://nordlandtours.de who perfectly designed the journey

Yesterday we had a long 8 h drive from Dawson City back to Whitehorse with spectecular endless wilderness landscape.

Having been to the US for more than a week and getting back to Canada you can observe quite some cultural change despite food and everything else is quite similar.
Canadiens tend to be less customer oriented. Americans show more native friendliness and above all more entrepreneurship.

It was very interesting to see the huge efforts man undertook for gold.

Yesterday we were pretty close to the polar circle when traveling crossing the US-Canada border. North of the road there is nothing fore sure.
Looking forward to digging gold today.

While we hope for a late summer in Germany, autumn aproaches in Alaska – first leafes get gold already.

Yesterday night, we met a guy in the only bar of Tok, a 1000 people community in the middle of nowhere. Once he discovered we are from Germany we received a very warm and hearthy welcome and conversation started. Asking where we are from leads to Jena and Zeiss. He immediately knew the brand famous for optics, specifically riflescopes. I shall talk to Eric Schumacher, the CEO of Zeiss’s North American Sportsoptics Business to get him a long desired riflescope at employee discount …. Would make many more friends here in the wilderness.

Today we will be travelling on the “Top of the world highway” to Dawson City, the legendary heart of the Clondike Gold Rush.
Along the way we shall see a few smaller gold mining communities. Hopefully we will find them as we made the experience, that Alaskans have so many treasures they don’t advertise for. If we would not have the travel describtion, we would have missed quite a few since there are no early signs on the highways whats next – strange and certainly room for improvement;-)

Having spoken about littering this mornining, we found a place called mukluk land, where someone turned litter into a business – cute.
Position:Tok,Vereinigte Staaten
The much we like this endless free country, there is one thing we will probably never get used to. It’s the massive littering of all kind (specifically old cars) you find along the roads near the cities. People simply are messies.
This is in contrast to the efforts made at many places to protect nature.
Today, we are heading back to Tok (there is no other way to complete the round trip). At least we know the Dinners menu already, which is great food at Fast Eddies Restaurant.
There might be not much to report on today until we dig for gold in Dawson City tommorow.

This picture is the best we could get from Mt. McKinley. It was taken from the closest point one can get to at a distance of about 60 km and at an altitude of 1000 m.
The mountain only revealed approx. 3000 of its 6000 m. Imagine how big this mountain is.
Only 30% of Denali visitors do have the luck to see North Americas highest mountain in full.
Even though the iPhone is a great companion, it turns out that its camera is less suited for a wildlife photo safari as the below picture of a real Grizzly shows.
Today, we are taking the Tundra-Wilderness Tour into Denali Nat’l Park.
Since O2 has disconnected us from internet access and Wifi is free for 30 minutes only, we’ll keep posting probably tommorow.

After having not seen to many attractions yesterday since we drove all the way back from Seward to Anchorage I’d like to mention today, the friendlyness of all the people we met so far.
The Inlet Tower Hotel, where we stayed in Anchorage was the first hotel along tge route, that did not meet expectation. Once you should get here, do not pick this hotel.
We are now about to head towards Denali National Park. Weather looks promising 🙂

While having visited magnificant exit glacier yesterday, we saw the impact of global warming. The glacier was way larger only 20 yrs ago. However scientists are not sure if its all man made.
Today we shall discover Seward and Anchorage.
We’ll keep you posted.

Even though, we haven’t seen Northern lights, it is an interesting experience to be in a region with sunset at 11pm and sunrise at 5am. It never gets really dark.
The flipside of the coin: during winter it never gets really bright. Many of us won’t like this.

While we had quite a long drive yesterday, we wondered why the Alaska Highway had hundreds of random rough road sections. The reason was an earthquake back in 2002, that destroyed the only man-build thing in that region – the highway.
Reentering the US yesterday was never easier. Thomas declared the fresh vegetables we had in car and the officer replied: native English, are you sure, you are from Germany?, smiled and wiped us through.
Today another lengthy drive is on the agenda, with a glacier, a rendier farm and more along the way. Weather doesn’t look as good as before.
Thanks for yesterdays comments.

Finally, we arrived in the Alaska timezone – slept well for 9 hours in a superb clean 4 star hotel in the middle of nowhere (how on earth could one build such a hotel here?)
Anyway, today is supposed to be a stage with little less attractions but 460 km drive to Tok – another settlement consisting of gas stations and motels.
Weather ist still phantastic – warm and sunny.
